I was delighted by these two the moment I saw them. I wished very much to bring them to the library. Candidly photographing children is an even trickier area of street photography, so I was glad that their parents (pictured at left) were present. I approached them and asked if I could photograph their kids as they were reading. They were so enthusiastic about the underground library when I told them about it! They said “yes! sure!”, both of them in sync with their agreement. What was even more marvelous was the way these kids quietly observed our exchange, looking at their parents the entire time. When their parents expressed their agreement to me, they went back to reading and allowed me to photograph them, all without saying a word.

If you don’t already follow this blog, get on it immediately. NYC has an amazing (if not always reliable) MTA system, and it’s passengers might be one of the largest social cross-sections in the world. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the diversity of their books. This blog never lets me take it for granted.

In 2004, The New York Times wrote an article about the loneliest whale in the world. Scientists have been tracking her since 1992 and they discovered the problem:

She isn’t like any other baleen whale. Unlike all other whales, she doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have a family. She doesn’t belong to any tribe, pack or gang. She doesn’t have a lover. She never had one. Her songs come in groups of two to six calls, lasting for five to six seconds each. But her voice is unlike any other baleen whale. It is unique—while the rest of her kind communicate between 12 and 25hz, she sings at 52hz. You see, that’s precisely the problem. No other whales can hear her. Every one of her desperate calls to communicate remains unanswered. Each cry ignored. And, with every lonely song, she becomes sadder and more frustrated, her notes going deeper in despair as the years go by.

The silhouette on the shooting target is faceless. But the hoodie, the Skittles and the iced tea leave nothing to the imagination. This is meant to be Travyon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old shot to death in February in Sanford, Florida.
Skittles brand candy is clearly depicted on the targets. The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, a division of Mars Inc., produces and markets Skittles. They could stop the sale of these targets by taking legal action against the Hiller Armament Company, which sells the targets online.

This is one of the most reprehensible, indefensible, and disgusting things I have ever seen in my life. I can’t believe someone at the Hiller Armament Company thought this was okay.

Basic human decency says we need to stop this.

I can’t remember the last time something made me this angry.

Someone needs to find the assholes who made this and string them up by whatever body part would be most painful.
